3G mobile network
3G(第3世代移動通信) surī-jī
An older mobile generation used for voice and low-speed data. Japanese carriers have retired or scheduled the retirement of their 3G services.
A phone can look modern and still depend on 3G for calls if it lacks the carrier's compatible VoLTE implementation. After 3G closure, that phone may lose voice service even if some data bands work.
Check the exact model number, carrier compatibility list, VoLTE support, SIM and plan. DOCOMO ended FOMA on March 31, 2026; other carrier closure dates and migration measures differ.
