Online-only / Online-focused Plans

Some plans are designed to be handled almost entirely online. That can be fine — if you know what you are taking on.

Last checked: 2026-08-29 (JST)Application methods and support options can change. Always check the latest official information before applying.
Price is not the whole story

A cheaper plan can cost you more time and stress if you cannot get help in a language you understand. Every plan page shows a Support Level — not just a price.

What “online-focused” actually means

Some plans — including plans from the major carriers — are built to be run online. Depending on the plan, several things may be online-only: applying, changing your plan, getting support, troubleshooting, and activating the SIM.

This is not automatically bad. It is only a problem if you are not set up to do those things yourself. The question that matters is not “Is it cheap?” — it is “Can I handle this online, in a language I understand?”

Common questions

What are ahamo, povo2.0 and LINEMO?

Online-focused plans from the major carriers' groups. Depending on the plan, several things can be online-only: applying, changing the plan, getting support, troubleshooting and activating the SIM. They are not automatically a worse choice — the question is whether you are set up to do those things yourself.

Are online-only plans a bad choice?

Not automatically. It is only a problem if you are not set up to do those things yourself. The question that matters is not “Is it cheap?” — it is “Can I handle this online, in a language I understand?”

Can I sign up for an online-only plan in a carrier shop?

You may be able to get help completing the online application at some shops, but the contract is still an online application and ongoing support is chat, app and web. Some shops charge a fee for that help.

How do I compare online-focused options?

Compare how you apply, whether a store procedure exists, whether paid store assistance is offered, and the online, phone and chat support channels. Conditions change often, so the “last checked” date is part of the data, not a footnote.

Which online plan is right for me?

Roughly: ahamo suits people comfortable online who want chat and web support; povo2.0 suits fully self-service users in an app; LINEMO suits online sign-up with chat support; an MVNO suits the lowest price if you can do your own setup. The plan-fit tool walks through it with your situation.
