Telephone relay service fee
電話リレーサービス料 denwa rirē sābisu ryō
A small number-based charge that supports the 24-hour telephone relay service used by people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech difficulties.
Telephone relay operators interpret between sign language or text and voice so that a registered user can place and receive telephone calls. The support charge funds the operators, interpreting booths, systems and other costs of providing the service continuously.
The amount is calculated by fiscal year and may appear as a separate line on mobile, fixed-line or IP-phone bills. Whether and how the end user is charged depends on the telephone company.
